Something a little special today – a complete short story in a post. Not just any short story either, this is one of my earliest but is still great fun. It’s from about five or six years ago and I copied it from a notebook today (it was before I switched to a laptop for writing) leaving it pretty much as it was originally. It is a bit rough in places but I wanted to leave it in its original form.

Our miraculous EverYoung technology can ensure that you never age another day. You will never have to worry about wrinkles, sagging skin, thinning hair, varicose veins or any other sign of ageing. And that’s not all! You’ll never feel old either. No aching joints, no fading health.
All of this in one easy treatment session, for a mere five thousand dollars. That’s right — a single treatment of EverYoung medicine and you’ll never worry about old age again!
<Screen fades to show a newsroom studio and a tanned, dark haired presenter in his late twenties>
Newscaster: The “EverYoung” treatment, latest miracle cure for ageing and already becoming the latest must-do fashion trend. I have with me Dr Steven Carlson, inventor of the EverYoung treatment.
<Camera pulls back to show an elderly, white haired distinguished looking man>
Newscaster: Good evening Doctor.
Doctor: Good evening.
Newscaster: Perhaps you could tell us more of how the EverYoung treatment works?
Doctor: I’m afraid I can’t go into any details as it would betray trade secrets. What I can say is that the results are exactly as described in the advert.
Newscaster: OK, but a question many people are asking is why? The world population is at critical levels, ten times was it was just thirty years ago in the year two-thousand. Even in western countries we are living crammed into tiny spaces, rarely getting to see or even contact family, and you are making it worse. I believe you have treated nearly a million people already with millions more waiting to be treated. Why do it?
Doctor: I think the question missed a fundamental point. Virtually none of those treated have felt the need to go on and have children. The constant desire to breed is what has caused this population disaster. Eliminating that desire will help, not hinder, the crisis.
Newscaster: You say virtually none of those treated have gone on to have children. Isn’t it more accurate to say that none have?
<The Doctor appears flustered>
Doctor: Er… well… I can’t go into the specifics…
Newscaster: Then let me. Your treatment involves a lethal injection. That is why patients don’t age, don’t worry and in particular don’t have children. Because families can’t stay physically in touch anymore no one noticed. Am I right Doctor Carlson?
Doctor: Well… that is… yes. OK. You are right, but we do exactly what the advert says. Is it our fault if people are so vain they don’t think it through, so selfish they want eternal life and youth even with the current pressures of overpopulation?
<The doctor stands up and storms off camera>
Newscaster: Thank you Doctor Carlson. In other news…
Newscaster: I have some breaking news… Doctor Steven Carlson, founder of EverYoung and exposed as a murderer on this show yesterday evening, has been found murdered at his home. No further details yet, but once we know more you’ll know more.
I guess you could say he got a taste of his own medicine! Now, back to the weather…
